Who Am I 02:14
Who am I? Who are we? If you say I’m not a planet… whom do I believe? I was famous, I was on museum walls, Look at me now...how far you’ve seen me fall Who am I? Merely a dwarf? Who am I? You say nothing more. Who am I? Do you know me? Who am I? Do you my story? CHORUS: (You’ll say) Pluto, Pluto, We’ll never let you go We’ll never let you go PLUTO: But you do though, you do though, You let me go Talk(You let me go) This is my story Which you wrote I was a hero now a footnote Let’s relive the tales I tell myself If you think I’m cold, well...I can’t help myself I’m far from the sun. CHORUS: Pluto, Pluto We’ll never let you go
2.
The story of me, Pluto begins in 1906. Percival Lowell who founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona a few years prior started searching for a possible ninth planet, which was referred to as “Planet X.
3.
I am Percival, (Percival, Percival), Lowell, A self made man and astronomer as well, I opened up my own observatory, started a huge search... I want to make history Search is going well At least from what I can tell I’m not quite sure My camera has a tiny aperture I’ve studied Mars, got criticized, but I still trust my weary eyes, I will search- I’ll never fail Scan the heavens from the depths of hell <-- to the depths of hell? 4xin1 Do it all, I'll put it all to test, we shall find Planet X! “Unfortunately...Percival continued his search until his death.” Now I’m gone… gone… gone… gone And the search goes on… All: Do it all...we’ll put it to the test We shall find Planet X
4.
After a ten years, the Lowell (Lah-well) Observatory was ready to resume the search. It was 1929 and the director Melvin Slipher found a young lad who was awarded the task of locating Planet X. A 23 year named Clyde Tombough.
5.
Found it! 01:38
Clyde Tombough, 23 year old kansan “You think you can find Planet X?” YEA SON! I’ll image the night sky, image it just right compare images on different nights to see if it aligns Use a blink compractor, I can work much harder Track the movement in the sky, I can work much smarter I was born in Illinois / good with a telescope, I look up at the night sky and I’m so filled with hope I can find the ninth- HYUGH- I can find Planet X! No- I won’t stop till I reach success! A year at this, it’s hard to keep up, When the skies so big, but I can’t give up, A spend a week comparing photographs, Which contain up to a million stars...damn it’s tough LOWELL: Do it all, put it to test You will find planet X Do it all, put it to test You will find planet X Oh my… look at this right here... Wait one second I gotta make clear This could be discovery of the year Let's make sure before we cheer It’s got an orbit like Neptune God I hope that it’s true Not an asteroid or moon, It’s confirmed by others too! Oh this just happened! We just found the ninth planet, Clyde! You found the ninth! Clyde! You found the ninth! Yo it just happened You can’t plan this! Yo it just happened We just found the ninth planet (x4)
6.
I was found on February 18th, 1930. Man, I was worldwide news. Of course, I was still named Planet X. So, it was time to find a name. The Observatory, which had the right to name it received over 1,000 suggestions. It was March 14th, 1930 and an eleven year old girl was having breakfast in her home in Oxford, England. Her name was Venetia Burney.
7.
My grandpapa read a newspaper, and I filled up with glee, cause I like planets, and there’s a new planet ...discovery My grandpa reads me books, especially when I go to sleep and we were taking a look reading about Roman... mythology They said ... they were looking for a name, Something really not the same, To name that pretty rock In the heavens Anyone, anywhere, any age… Even eleven~ So I said... Pluto! How about Pluto? Let’s think about Pluto, I really like Pluto! “it’s got Percival Lowell’s initials. He’s the guy who started this whole thing.” “it’s the Roman god of the underworld. He hid where the sun didn’t reach him. Seems pretty appropriate for a planet farthest from the sun”
8.
Decades passed and as time passed more was found about me, and that’s where things started going wrong. My orbit was substantially different than other planets. I was significantly smaller than what they thought. By the early 2000’s already many astronomers were starting to question Pluto’s status as a planet. First, Neil deGrasse Tyson demoted Pluto as director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York.
9.
There was high expectations, We thought it was so big, but oh you poor soul Listen to this There are seven moons in the solar system bigger than you, You’re not a planet if you’re smaller than a moon. (reporter): Neil Degrasse Tyson was sure: Not a planet. Front page story, New York Times, but Pluto face it, it was your time, A panel of experts all agreed, Your time as a planet was history. Then, Mike Brown discovered an object the same size as Pluto and named it Eris, instead of arguing he found a planet, he argued both his planet and Pluto should not be planets. He’s known as the true killer of Pluto. All my life, went as I planned it, I wanted to be the guy who found a planet, And when I found Eris, which was the same size, It was either my greatest moment or Pluto’s demise But I am a scientist and I go with fact, And Pluto there’s just so much that you lack. I know this is sad, you may wish to seek help But you’re just a large object on the Kuiper (Kai-per) Belt
10.
In 2006, The International Astronomical Union resolved that Pluto classified as a dwarf planet. They included Eris as a dwarf planet as well. There were online petitions, and even the Illinois State Senate passed a resolution that stated Pluto was “unfairly downgraded to a ‘dwarf’ planet by the IAU.
11.
Now you know me, But do you care? Do you think of me When you look up there…? That’s the resolution Now we’re done Couldn’t complete one revolution Around the Sun NASA sent a spaceship, to check me out, You want to get to know me, after you kick me out. And you say "Pluto, pluto, we'll never let you go"

about

The mini musical about the true story of Pluto, our favorite (dwarf) planet. The story of fearless explorers searching for the next frontier, unusual heroes from the most unusual places (Illinois? England? Who knew?!) and unknowing yet likable villains. It's a story of pure joy met with devastating heartbreak. Enjoy the show.
